Historical Background

The B-4 M1931 203mm heavy howitzer, nicknamed "Stalin’s Hammer", was developed by the Soviet Union in the late 1920s for destroying reinforced concrete fortifications. It was officially put into service in 1931 and assigned to the high-level artillery reserve of the Red Army. This heavy gun adopted a tracked chassis, which helped it travel over muddy terrain. It first showed powerful performance in the Soviet-Finnish war, smashing the Mannerheim line with direct fire. During World War II, it became the core siege weapon of the Soviet army. In the Battle of Berlin, B-4 howitzers were pushed close to enemy buildings to carry out direct bombardment, destroying German fortifications and urban strongholds, and played an important role in the final assault on the Reichstag.
