The Su-34 fighter bomber inherits the excellent aerodynamic design of the Su-27 fighter family, with its biggest feature being its flat head. The reason for this is that it adopts a parallel two seater design, which increases the size of its head. At the same time, in order to reduce volume, the head is designed to be flat.

The Su-34 fighter bomber was developed by the Soviet Union's Sukhoi Design Bureau (now known as the Russian Joint Aircraft Manufacturing Group Sukhoi), with the earliest model being the Su-27IB test aircraft. Its test aircraft made its maiden flight in April 1990, and the pre production version made its maiden flight on December 18, 1993.

It was originally expected to be fully operational in 2002, but due to insufficient funds caused by the dissolution of the Soviet Union, it was not until July 2007 that the Russian Ministry of Defense announced its official takeover.
