    Historical Background

    USS North Carolina BB-55 is the lead ship of North Carolina-class fast battleships, commissioned in April 1941. It took part in nearly all major Pacific naval campaigns in WWII, serving mainly for carrier escort and shore bombardment, and earned 15 battle stars, the most decorated US battleship in World War II. After decommission, it was preserved as a memorial museum ship in Wilmington, North Carolina.
