    Historical Background

    • The Hawker Sea Fury was developed by Hawker Aircraft, derived from the Tempest fighter and redesigned for naval carrier operations.
    • FB.11 was the primary fighter-bomber variant, entering Royal Navy service in 1948. It was one of the fastest mass-produced single piston-engine aircraft ever built.
    • Armed with four 20mm Hispano cannons plus external ordnance, it was tasked with air combat, ground strike and close air support.
    • It gained fame in the Korean War operating from British aircraft carriers; it is credited with one documented piston fighter victory over a MiG-15 jet fighter.
    • The Sea Fury FB.11 served widely with Commonwealth and export air forces, and was retired from Royal Navy frontline service in the mid-1950s as jet fighters took over carrier duties.
