Historical Background

• The Sukhoi Su-24MR (NATO: Fencer-E) is a specialized tactical reconnaissance variant derived from the Su-24 frontline bomber family.
• It replaced the original attack radar with side-looking airborne radar, optical cameras and infrared reconnaissance equipment, removing most offensive strike capability.
• It retains terrain-following radar for low-altitude high-speed penetration deep behind enemy lines to collect battlefield intelligence.
• It can carry R-60 short-range air-to-air missiles for self-defense and transmit reconnaissance data back to ground command in real time.
• The Su-24MR first flew in September 1980 and entered service in the mid-1980s, serving with Russian Air Force reconnaissance units.
