Historical Background

• The Sukhoi Su-33UB, also designated Su-27KUB, is a Russian side-by-side two-seat carrier-based fighter prototype developed from Su-33.
• Only one airframe was constructed, designed for carrier landing training, combat missions and airborne technology verification.
• It adopted the uncommon side-by-side cockpit arrangement to improve instructor and trainee coordination during shipboard landing operations.
• This prototype served as a testbed for new radar, avionics and thrust vectoring engine technologies.
• It completed its maiden flight in 1999, and carried out flight trials on the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier, remaining as a one-off experimental demonstrator.
