Historical Background

• The F-100F was developed based on F-100D, first flight in March 1957, with total production of 339 airframes.
• It was designed for F-100 series pilot conversion training while retaining full fighter-bomber combat capability.
• Powered by Pratt & Whitney J57-P-21 afterburning turbojet engine, capable of supersonic flight in level flight.
• During Vietnam War, modified F-100F undertook multiple hazardous special missions: the very first Wild Weasel SAM suppression aircraft, and Misty fast forward air control (FAC) to locate enemy targets and direct strike aircraft over the Ho Chi Minh Trail.
• Some airframes also performed combat strike, close air support and reconnaissance missions.
• The F-100F remained in USAF service until mid-1970s, and also served with several NATO allied air forces.
