Historical Background

• The North American F-100 Super Sabre was the world’s first combat aircraft capable of sustained supersonic speed in level flight, evolved from the famous F-86 Sabre.
• F-100C first flew in March 1954 and entered USAF service in July 1955, powered by upgraded J57-P-21 turbojet engine.
• This variant added strengthened airframe, wet underwing pylons and air refueling equipment, optimized for fighter-bomber and nuclear toss bombing missions.
• In August 1955, an F-100C set a new world air speed record of 1323 km/h.
• It served with USAF Tactical Air Command; later examples saw limited combat duty in Vietnam for close air support.
• The F-100 series remained in USAF service until the early 1970s, and was also exported to several allied nations.
