Historical Background

• The Focke-Wulf Fw 200 Condor originated as a civil long-distance airliner for Lufthansa before being adapted for military service at the outbreak of WWII.
• The Fw 200 C-3 entered service in 1941, fitted with upgraded Bramo 323R-2 radial engines and reinforced airframe to carry heavier bomb loads.
• Operated by Luftwaffe KG 40, its primary missions were long-range maritime reconnaissance and anti-shipping strikes against Allied merchant convoys in the North Atlantic.
• The Condor earned the nickname "Scourge of the Atlantic", locating and attacking unescorted supply ships and guiding German U-boats towards Allied convoys.
• Its vulnerability to Allied fighters and improved convoy air cover gradually limited its effectiveness. Production ceased in 1944, and very few Condors survived the end of World War II.
