Historical Background

• The Wellington GR Mk.XIV was the final dedicated anti-submarine variant of the Wellington, serving with RAF Coastal Command.
• It was fitted with ASV Mk.III microwave radar combined with Leigh Light, enabling crews to detect and attack German U-boats surfaced at night.
• The nose turret was eliminated to fit radar equipment; many airframes applied painted fake turret outlines to confuse enemy gunners.
• Powered by 1,735 hp Bristol Hercules XVI radial engines, total production reached 841 airframes.
• Mainly deployed over the English Channel, Bay of Biscay and North Atlantic to hunt German submarines.
• As newer maritime patrol aircraft entered service, the Wellington GR Mk.XIV was gradually phased out after WWII ended.
