Historical Background

• The Vickers Wellington Mk.III was the major upgraded variant of the Wellington bomber, powered by two Bristol Hercules XI radial engines with higher output.
• It featured a new four-gun FN20A tail turret, greatly improving rear defensive firepower compared to the two-gun turret of Mk.IC.
• Entered RAF service in June 1941 and became the backbone of Bomber Command’s night strategic bombing campaign over occupied Europe in 1941–1942.
• Total production reached 1519 airframes; it was also used for glider towing, electronic warfare and special duties missions.
• As four-engine heavy bombers such as Lancaster came into mass service, Wellington Mk.III was gradually withdrawn from frontline bombing missions and transferred to secondary roles.
