Historical Background

• The Vickers Wellington was a twin-engine medium bomber of Royal Air Force, designed by Barnes Wallis with revolutionary geodetic construction.
• The Mk.IC was the main early production variant, adding waist defensive guns, with a total of 2685 airframes built. It carried a crew of six.
• It served as RAF’s primary night bomber in the early phase of WWII, undertaking strategic bombing missions over German occupied territories.
• The geodetic airframe granted outstanding damage resistance; many heavily damaged Wellingtons could still return to base.
• Gradually replaced by larger four-engine heavy bombers like Lancaster, later airframes were converted for maritime patrol, anti-submarine and transport missions.
