    Historical Background

    • The Westland Wyvern S.4 was Britain’s single-seat carrier-borne turboprop strike aircraft, originally designated TF.4.
    • It was powered by the Armstrong Siddeley Python turboprop engine with counter-rotating propellers, developed after the failure of the original piston engine plan.
    • Entered Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm service in 1953, assigned to 813 Naval Air Squadron, tasked with torpedo attack, bombing and rocket strike missions.
    • It saw combat during the Suez Crisis in 1956, conducting ground strike missions from aircraft carriers.
    • Due to reliability issues and the arrival of jet aircraft, the Wyvern was retired in 1958, only a relatively small number were built.
