Historical Background

• The F-105D Thunderchief was built by Republic Aviation, designed as a high-speed, low-level nuclear strike fighter-bomber for the United States Air Force.
• Powered by Pratt & Whitney J75 turbojet, it was one of the largest single-seat combat aircraft of its era, capable of supersonic flight at low altitude.
• The F-105D became the primary USAF strike aircraft over North Vietnam, undertaking numerous dangerous deep penetration bombing missions.
• Nicknamed "Thud" by its pilots, it carried heavy bomb loads, but also suffered heavy combat losses during the Vietnam conflict.
• It remained in USAF active service until the mid-1970s, later transferred to Air National Guard units before full retirement.
