Historical Background

• The Tu-16 (NATO reporting name Badger) is a twin-engine swept-wing medium bomber designed by Tupolev, first flown in 1952 and entering service in 1954.
• Tu-16K-26 (Badger G) was a Soviet naval missile carrier variant modified to launch KSR-5 long-range supersonic anti-ship missiles for maritime strike missions.
• China obtained Tu-16 technology and domestically produced the licensed version designated H-6, which became the core medium bomber of the Chinese Air Force and Naval Air Force.
• The original Soviet Tu-16 fleet was retired in the early 1990s, while the continuously upgraded H-6 series remains operational with Chinese forces to this day.
