    Historical Background

    • The Antonov An-2 (NATO reporting name Colt) is a classic single-engine multi-purpose biplane designed in 1947.
    • The ski-equipped variant was modified for winter operations in Siberia and northern wilderness regions of the Soviet Union.
    • Replacing wheels with skis allowed the aircraft to take off and land on snow-covered frozen ground without paved airfields.
    • It was widely used for cargo transport, supply delivery, medical evacuation and parachute dropping in remote northern areas.
    • This rugged airframe remains famous for its short take-off and landing capability, and many ski-fitted An-2s remained in service for decades.
