Historical Background

• The F-107A Ultra Sabre began as an advanced redesign of the F-100 Super Sabre, originally designated F-100B.
• Its most distinctive feature is the dorsal variable air intake, which freed the belly space to carry semi-buried nuclear bombs.
• The first prototype took flight in September 1956 and later reached Mach 2 during flight testing.
• Only three prototypes were constructed. It competed head-to-head against the Republic F-105 Thunderchief for USAF tactical fighter-bomber contract.
• The F-105 was selected for mass production, so the F-107A never entered service; the prototypes were later transferred to NASA for high-speed flight research.
