Historical Background

• The Harbin H-5 (NATO reporting name Beagle) is China’s domestically developed light jet tactical bomber, redesigned based on Soviet Il-28 airframe with around 40% structural modifications.
• It made its maiden flight on 25 September 1966 and entered mass production in 1967, powered by two WP-5 turbojet engines.
• Designed for daylight tactical bombing, close air support and maritime strike missions, capable of carrying conventional bombs or nuclear ordnance.
• The H-5 served in Chinese Air Force and Naval Air Force for decades, with variants including reconnaissance, trainer and electronic warfare versions. All H-5 aircraft were fully retired from active service in 2009.
