Historical Background

• The Type 87 AW is Japan’s domestically developed self-propelled anti-aircraft gun, formally adopted by JGSDF in 1987.
• It uses the Type 74 tank chassis and mounts twin 35mm Oerlikon L90 anti-aircraft cannons paired with advanced radar fire control system.
• Crewed by 3 soldiers, it can automatically detect, track and engage low-flying aircraft and helicopters.
• Its primary mission is to provide mobile short-range air defence for armoured and mechanized formations of Japan Ground Self-Defense Force.
