Historical Background

• The ASU-85 was a casemate-style airborne self-propelled gun developed for Soviet VDV airborne troops, entering serial production in 1960.
• It was armed with the 85mm D-70 main gun, designed to provide direct fire support and anti-tank capability for paratrooper units.
• The Mod.1970 variant received minor upgrades to sighting, radio equipment and external fittings during mid-life overhaul.
• Though it could be transported by heavy military transport aircraft, it could not be air-dropped by parachute. It served with Soviet airborne divisions until retirement in the early 1990s.
