    History

    Germany also built several special‑purpose vehicles based on the Panzer IV tank chassis. Between February and May 1940, Krupp converted 20 PzKpfw IV/C and IV/D tanks into Bruckenleger IVb bridgelayers fitted with an assault bridge. The vehicle weighed 28 tons with an overall bridge length of 9 meters. These bridgelayers served with the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 10th Panzer Divisions during the 1940 campaign in Belgium and France.

    Deemed excessively heavy by German forces, the design was discontinued in 1941. Most vehicles were converted back into combat tanks by late 1940.
    In January 1941, Krupp produced four Bruckenleger IVc bridgelayers, which saw combat during the 1941 invasion of the Soviet Union under 3rd Panzer Division.
