Historical Background

• The PHZ-89 (Type 89) is China’s first domestically developed tracked 122mm 40-barrel multiple rocket launcher, finalized in 1989
• Built on the proven 321 medium tracked chassis, equipped with an automatic reload system, which greatly improved combat efficiency
• Its 40 launch tubes can deliver a full salvo in only 20 seconds, capable of firing high-explosive, cluster, smoke and illumination rockets
• The automatic reloading system can replenish the full 40 rockets within approximately 3 minutes
• Designed to provide long-range area fire suppression against enemy troop concentrations, artillery positions and light armoured formations
• First publicly shown during the 1999 National Day parade, widely serving in PLA artillery units
