    Historical Background

    • The Type 83 (PLZ-83) 152mm self-propelled gun-howitzer was China’s first domestically developed large-calibre tracked self-propelled artillery, finalized in 1983
    • It was built on the 321 medium tracked chassis and armed with modified Type 66 152mm towed howitzer
    • It made its public debut at the 1984 National Day military parade
    • Designed to provide long-range fire suppression support for mechanized army units, capable of firing high-explosive, armour-piercing, smoke and illumination rounds
    • Only a limited production run of 78 vehicles was built, serving with PLA artillery brigades
    • Its design laid important technical foundations for China’s later self-propelled artillery development
