Historical Background

• The PL-37 was a Soviet light artillery armoured railcar, designed and built from 1939 at the Krasny Profintern plant in Bryansk
• It served as the main fighting carriage for Soviet armoured trains on the Eastern Front during WWII
• Armed with twin 76.2 mm M1902/30 field guns in separate rotating turrets and six 7.62 mm Maxim machine guns for close defence
• The heavy riveted steel armour protected the crew against small arms fire and artillery shrapnel
• Around 24 PL-37 wagons were constructed; they fought in the early stages of the German invasion, defending rail lines, repelling infantry assaults and countering light armoured vehicles
• Many were lost in combat or captured by Axis forces during 1941–1942
