    Historical Background

    • The BR57 (Panzerlok Baureihe 57) armoured locomotive was converted from the Prussian G10 heavy 0-10-0 steam locomotive, originally designed before WWI
    • In WWII, Germany fitted thick steel armour plating around the boiler, cab and engine sections to protect the locomotive from small arms fire and shrapnel
    • Mainly used as the power unit for BP-42 and BP-44 armoured trains, deployed widely on the Eastern Front against partisan raids and frontline supply transport
    • The added armour increased total weight dramatically, limiting maximum speed; these armoured locomotives were normally placed in the middle of armoured trains for better battlefield survivability
