Historical Background

• The YF-23 is a twin-engine single-seat stealth fighter prototype jointly developed by Northrop and McDonnell Douglas for the US Air Force ATF (Advanced Tactical Fighter) program
• Two prototypes were constructed, PAV-1 nicknamed Black Widow II and the grey PAV-2 known as Gray Ghost
• It featured outstanding stealth performance, supercruise capability and long combat range, competing head-to-head against the YF-22 prototype
• Although YF-23 displayed excellent overall performance, the US Air Force finally selected YF-22 for further development into F-22 Raptor
• The two YF-23 prototypes were preserved in museums, becoming legendary "what-if" aircraft in aviation history
