    Historical Background

USS Arizona BB‑39 was a Pennsylvania‑class battleship of the United States Navy, commissioned in 1916. On December 7 1941, during the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, a heavy armour‑piercing bomb detonated her forward ammunition magazine. The ship exploded and sank rapidly, with heavy loss of life. The wreck remains at Pearl‑Harbor as a national memorial, one of the most iconic symbols of World‑War‑II Pacific history.
