    Historical Background

    The Douglas TBD-1 Devastator was the United States Navy’s first all-metal carrier torpedo bomber, entering service in 1937. It took part in Pearl Harbor and early Pacific War battles. Though advanced at its introduction, it became obsolete by 1942. Heavy losses were suffered during the Battle of Midway, after which the Devastator was quickly withdrawn from frontline service and replaced by the TBF Avenger.
