Historical Background

• The A-6E TRAM was the major upgraded version of A-6E Intruder. TRAM stands for Target Recognition and Attack Multi-Sensor system.
• First flight in March 1974 and entered US Navy service in 1979. The gyro-stabilized TRAM turret under the nose enabled precision targeting and delivery of laser-guided bombs day and night.
• Crewed by two aviators and powered by twin Pratt & Whitney J52 turbojet engines. It retained excellent all-weather low-level penetration strike capability.
• This variant saw combat in the Gulf War, performing deep penetration precision strike missions against Iraqi targets.
• It was the final major production variant of the Intruder family, serving with US Navy and USMC until the whole fleet was retired in 1997.
