Historical Background

• The A-6A Intruder was the initial mass-production variant of the Intruder family, entering US Navy service in 1963.
• Equipped with the DIANE integrated digital navigation and attack system, it could perform low-level precision strikes day or night in poor weather conditions.
• Crewed by two aviators, powered by two Pratt & Whitney J52 turbojet engines, it became the primary carrier-borne heavy attack aircraft of the US Navy and USMC in the Vietnam War.
• A total of 480 A-6A airframes were built; some were later rebuilt and upgraded into other Intruder variants.
• It carried heavy ordnance loads for deep penetration strikes against North Vietnamese targets, and remained in service until being gradually replaced by newer aircraft.
