Historical Background

• The JHU-6 (H-6U) is China’s first domestically developed aerial refueling tanker, modified from the H-6 medium bomber platform.
• It retains the twin-engine swept-wing layout of the H-6, with two hose-and-drogue refueling pods mounted under the outer wings to refuel compatible fighters such as J-8D.
• The aircraft made its public debut during the 1999 National Day military parade.
• Its main mission is to extend the combat radius of Chinese fighter jets, greatly improving the long-range operational capability of the PLAAF.
• It remains an important aerial refueling asset for Chinese Air Force for medium-range air power projection.
