Historical Background

• The V188, originally designated D311, was a special heavy twin diesel-electric locomotive built by Krupp and SSW for the German Wehrmacht in 1940–1941
• Constructed specifically to pull the gigantic 80cm K(E) Gustav and Dora super-heavy railway artillery
• Only four twin-unit locomotives were completed, two additional units were ordered but never finished due to wartime shortages
• Two units served in Crimea for the deployment of Dora heavy gun; the remaining pairs operated on the Western Front
• Each twin locomotive consists of two coupled power cars working as one single traction unit
• After WWII, two surviving examples entered Deutsche Bundesbahn service and were reclassified as BR288; all were scrapped by 1973
