Historical Background

• PanzerTriebwagen Nr.16 (PzTrWg 16) was a one-of-a-kind heavy armoured diesel railcar developed by Germany during WWII, built on the WR 550 D14 diesel locomotive base
• Originally fitted with twin 2cm Flakvierling 38 anti-aircraft guns, later rearmed with captured Soviet 76.2 mm FK 295/1 field guns at both ends for anti-armour and fire support missions
• Powered by a 550 hp MAN diesel engine with Voith hydraulic transmission, protected by heavy armour ranging from 31 mm to 84 mm
• Entered service on 27 January 1944, assigned to several German armoured train units on the Eastern Front
• Primary roles included anti-partisan patrol, frontline fire support and protecting vital railway supply lines
• Only a single vehicle was constructed; it was captured by Polish forces in May 1945 near Neuruppin at the end of the war
