German 56-ton Tank Transporter
The development of this vehicle dates back to 1965, when the Federal Republic of Germany and the United States decided to design a Heavy Equipment Transporter (HET) to carry the jointly developed MBT-70 main battle tank. The prime contractors for the tractor unit were Chrysler Corporation (USA) and Faun (West Germany), while the semi-trailer was developed by Krupp (West Germany). In 1970, the MBT-70 and its associated HET program were cancelled. West Germany continued the project independently, resulting in the SLT 50-2 tractor unit, also known as the "Elefant" (Elephant). The German Army ordered 328 units, with the last delivery in 1980. Together with its semi-trailer, the vehicle is capable of transporting all armoured vehicles in the Army inventory, including the Leopard 2 main battle tank.
