    Historical Background

    IJN Destroyer Matsu was lead ship of the Matsu‑class Type‑D escort destroyer. Keel laid August 1943, launched February 1944, commissioned April 1944. Designed for rapid mass‑production under wartime material shortages, main missions were anti‑submarine, anti‑air escort rather than fleet gun‑battle. She carried main naval guns, large‑volume 25 mm anti‑aircraft cannons, quadruple torpedo launchers and depth‑charge gear. On 4 August 1944, while performing transport‑escort duty near Chichi‑Jima, Matsu was sunk by US carrier‑borne aircraft, with only four‑month active‑service life.
