- Planned as a general-purpose coastal patrol vessel, this class was designed as a stealth vessel, with composite materials being used in the superstructure.
- In addition, because the ship's primary role is anti-submarine patrol, the weight of the hull has been reduced by using new steel materials for the main hull.
- Construction of the class' lead ship, Steregshchiy, began in 2001 and was commissioned in 2008.
