The M4 Sherman was an American medium tank during World War II. The first prototype was built in 1941 and mass production was carried out between 1942 and 1945. A total of approximately 49000 tanks of all versions were manufactured, making it one of the highest production tanks of World War II and the most important tank in Allied equipment during this conflict. The M4 Sherman is powered by a single engine version of the M4A1 Continental R 975 C4, with a power output of 400 horsepower. Depending on the version, the vehicle is equipped with a 75mm M3 cannon, a 76mm M1 cannon or a 105mm M4 howitzer, and two 7.62mm Browning 1919A machine guns.
The M4 Sherman was developed as a successor to the M2 and M3 tanks, despite using many of the latter's components. Firstly, it only utilized slight modifications to the chassis of the M3 luggage car. When designing the M4 Sherman, the focus was mainly on playing the role of an infantry support vehicle, rather than fighting against enemy tanks - this is the role of an American tank destroyer. Only the possibility of conflict with the cart is considered Pz. Kpfw III and Pz.Kpfw IV also played an important role in the large-scale production of new tanks and minimizing production costs. As a result, tanks from 1942 and early 1943 were well equipped with average armor, but had tilted front plates and poor maneuverability, especially in the first version where they easily caught fire due to colliding with the engine compartment. However, at the same time, a tank that can truly be mass-produced and has enormous modernization potential has been created. Many development versions were created during the mass production process of M4 Sherman. In chronological order, the first one is the M4A1 version that already has cast armor. The other M4A2 has welded armor and a new General Motors 6460 engine with 375-410hp, but is less prone to catching fire. A version of M4A3 also appeared, equipped with a 105mm howitzer powered by a Ford GAA engine with a power of 450 horsepower. On the basis of the M4A3 version, two sub versions were created: the M4A3E2 Jumbo with reinforced armor and the M4A3E8 with HVSS and 76mm artillery. An interesting development version is also the T34 Kaliobo, which is equipped with missiles that are not guided on the turret.
M4 Sherman was also supplied in large quantities to Britain and the Red Army. The former developed a version of Firefly based on this, equipped with a 17 pound anti tank gun. During World War II, the M4 Sherman tank fought in battles in North Africa (1942-1943), Italy (1943-1945), Normandy, France, and West Germany (1944-1945), as well as in the Red Army in the Pacific or Eastern Front. After World War II, M4 Sherman was used in many countries, including Argentina, Belgium, India, Israel, Japan, Pakistan and Türkiye. He also participated in many conflicts after 1945, including the 1965 Indo Pakistani War and the 1967 Six Day War.
