Historical Background

The M114 Armored Reconnaissance Vehicle is a tracked reconnaissance vehicle developed to support M113 command and reconnaissance missions, and served with the US Army during the Vietnam War. It is amphibious and can be airdropped by parachute. The M114 was retired from US military service in 1973. A small number of retired vehicles were transferred and used by law enforcement agencies such as the New York Police Department. The M114A1 is an upgraded variant fitted with a commander’s cupola and an internal weapon station for the M2 12.7mm heavy machine gun, with improved power performance.
