Historical Background

The 420 mm “Big Bertha” was a famous heavy siege howitzer manufactured by Krupp for Imperial Germany in World War I. Its huge 420‑millimeter caliber shell could destroy heavily‑reinforced fortress concrete defences. It saw combat from 1914, participating in the battles of Liège, Namur and Verdun, breaking down Belgian and French fortress systems. It became one of the most symbolic heavy artillery weapons of the First World War.
