The Liaoning is the People's Republic of China's first commissioned aircraft carrier.
Originally laid down as the Soviet Navy's Type 1143.6 heavy aircraft cruiser, the ship was sold unfinished to the People's Republic of China following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
After a long period of renovation, the ship was commissioned on September 25, 2012, and has undergone modernization to reach its current state.
