    Historical Background

    The BM-30 Smerch (9K58) is a Soviet/Russian heavy multiple rocket launcher system, entering service in the late 1980s. Equipped with twelve 300mm rockets, it delivers devastating long-range saturation fire against enemy troop concentrations, armour clusters and fortified positions. Mounted on the MAZ-543 8×8 high mobility chassis, it can rapidly relocate after firing to avoid counter-battery strikes. It remains in service with Russian forces and many export nations.
