Historical Background

The Pkw.K1 Type 82 Kübelwagen was the iconic light‑weight military utility vehicle of Nazi‑German Wehrmacht, designed by Porsche based on the civilian VW Beetle platform. The North‑Africa variant was specially modified for desert combat for Rommel’s Afrika‑Korps. Wide low‑pressure balloon tyres prevented sinking into loose sand, while air‑cooled rear engine performed reliably under high‑temperature, water‑short desert conditions. Main duties included officer transport, liaison and reconnaissance across the North‑African campaign from 1941‑1943.
