Historical background:

McDonnell Douglas proposed to develop an improved version of the F/A-18E/F based on the F/A-18C/D, where E is a single seater and F is a double seater.

The F/A-18E1 made its maiden flight in 1995, and the first F/A-18E/F Super Hornet squadron VFA-122 was established in 1999.

In 2000, VFA-115 Squadron became the first combat squadron to officially equip with F/A-18E and began service on the US nuclear powered aircraft carrier USS Lincoln in June 2002.

The F/A-18E/F entered service with the US Navy Fleet in 1999, gradually replacing the F-14 Tomcat fighter jet and becoming the main fighter jet of the US Navy Carrier Air Wing.
