Historical Background

M4A3(76)W Sherman entered service in late 1944. The “W” means wet‑stowage water‑jacketed ammunition bins, greatly lowering ammunition‑fire risk after being hit. Fitted with high‑velocity 76 mm M1 gun, its anti‑tank performance was much improved compared with original 75‑mm‑gun Shermans. It adopted Ford GAA V‑8 petrol engine and VVSS vertical volute‑spring suspension. General Creighton Abrams’ famous “Thunderbolt VII” belongs to this variant, widely deployed in Western‑European campaign until the end of WWII.
