    Historical Background

The Curtiss Hawk 81-A2 was the export designation of the P-40B Tomahawk, famous as the fighter of the American Volunteer Group, the Flying Tigers. Deployed in China in 1941, the Flying Tigers used these aircraft with iconic shark-mouth nose art to intercept Japanese bombers and fighters. The P-40 lacked high-altitude performance compared to Japanese fighters, but it was rugged, reliable and well-suited for medium-altitude combat over Burma and southwest China. The Flying Tigers achieved remarkable combat successes and became one of the most famous Allied air units in the early Pacific War.
