Historical Background

The “Vikings” was the well‑known flight demonstration team of West German Naval Aviation (Marineflieger), flying Lockheed F‑104G Starfighter jets. Established in 1983, the two‑aircraft team drew pilots and planes from Marinefliegergeschwader 2 (MFG 2) stationed at Eggebek air base, wowing air‑show spectators with spectacular high‑speed display routines.

Most of their service life was spent flying standard military paint schemes. In 1986 the team received a special celebratory white‑blue‑red livery adopting the state colours of Schleswig‑Holstein. The Vikings performed their final five air‑show demonstrations in this eye‑catching paintwork, before disbanding later that same year together with the withdrawal of MFG 2’s F‑104G fleet.
