    Historical Background

On November 21, 1981, Istrana Air Base in northern Italy hosted a legendary speed duel. Canadian F1 driver Gilles Villeneuve raced his 600‑horsepower turbo Ferrari 126CK against an Italian Air Force F‑104S Starfighter over a 1000‑meter runway. Villeneuve won by a narrow margin before the jet engine reached full thrust.

To honour this event and Gilles Villeneuve, the Italian Air Force donated a retired F‑104S to Ferrari in 1989. Repainted in famous Rosso Corsa racing red with Ferrari’s prancing‑horse badge and side code 4‑27, this unique aircraft is permanently exhibited at Ferrari Fiorano test track, symbolizing the bond between Italian motorsport and military aviation.
