    Historical Background

The Grumman A-6E Intruder was the final major production variant of the US Navy’s twin-engine, all-weather carrier attack aircraft. Entering service in the early 1970s, it featured upgraded radar, navigation and attack avionics. The later TRAM variant added an under-nose infrared and laser targeting turret for precision guided weapons. Capable of heavy ordnance delivery in darkness and bad weather, it saw extensive combat in the Vietnam War and the 1991 Gulf War. The Intruder remained in US Navy service until the mid-1990s.
