    Historical Background

The F/A-18C Hornet is a single-seat twin-engine carrier-based multi-role fighter and attack aircraft of the United States Navy. Developed by McDonnell Douglas, it entered operational service in the late 1980s with upgraded avionics, improved radar and weapon carrying capacity compared to earlier F/A-18A variants. VFC-12 is a US Navy adversary squadron, tasked to simulate enemy aircraft tactics to train Navy fighter pilots. Its jets are painted in distinctive aggressor camouflage schemes for dissimilar air combat training. The F/A-18C can perform air superiority, fleet defense, ground strike and SEAD missions, and has served as the backbone of US carrier air wings for decades.
