Historical Background

The FV103 Spartan belongs to Britain’s famous CVR(T) tracked combat vehicle family, developed by Alvis and entering British Army service in 1978. Designed as a compact armoured personnel carrier, it carries a crew of three plus four dismounted infantry troops, with excellent cross-country mobility and a high road speed for reconnaissance and rapid troop transport. As modern battlefield threats evolved, many Spartan vehicles received upgrade packages including the ODIN TES(H) remote weapon turret.

This remotely operated station allows gunners to engage targets safely from inside the hull, equipped with thermal sights, laser rangefinders and heavy machine gun armament. The upgraded Spartan served with British armoured reconnaissance and mechanised units for decades. Though gradually phased out of frontline British service after 2009, the Spartan remains a classic Cold War and modern British light armoured vehicle, widely recognised by military vehicle enthusiasts worldwide.
